South West
Mayo Development Company is run by a voluntary board of
local people who are active in the development of South and
West Mayo.
This Company,
which is by now very familiar to the communities of South
and West Mayo, was originally established as a rural
development group to run the LEADER pilot programme for
rural development. This was followed by LEADER II, which is
now completed. LDSP/Local Development Social Inclusion
Programme since 1997. In pursuing its rural and community
development brief in the South West Mayo area, the company
has also become involved in a number of different projects
and activities.
Since it's
establishment in 1991, the company has been instrumental in
the investment of over EURO6million of public funding in the
South West Mayo area. This investment has been the catalyst
for an equivalent amount of private and community sector
investment. The evidence of this investment is to be seen in
community buildings and infrastructure all over the area,
from Killeen to Brickens and from Cong to Glenhest. In the
same period many small enterprises have been established and
secured, providing substantial employment throughout the
area.
The company
is run by a board of directors, of which there are sixteen
at present. Twelve of those represent local community
interests. The community directors are normally four each
from the general Westport , Castlebar, and Ballinrobe/
Claremorris areas.
Community
directors are elected by the community organisations that
affiliate to the company.
